Raising the Standards Through Chapter Books: The C.I.A. Approach
Transitioning readers from lower level series books to more complex chapter books is no easy task. Sarah Collinge explores a process for teaching students to read chapter books that not only increases motivation to read, but also guarantees students’ success with understanding more complex texts. The strategy you will learn in this class is one she designed, based on research based practices. It is the C. I. A. approach. Students will easily move up blooms taxonomy as they first work to comprehend the text, and then are challenged to interpret patterns in the text and pull out the author’s message. Finally, Sarah will share how students move to application by thinking about how the book impacts their lives. The readers’ notebook is an essential tool in this process, bridging reading and writing in a way that is authentic, while also preparing students for high-stakes tests.
